The first burial at this cemetery is said to have been on June 09, 1849 prior to the land being deeded to the cemetery association. This cemetery is the oldest in the Archdiocese of Newark. The cemetery is associated with St. Peter's Church which was founded in 1829 in Jersey City. The 4.92 acre plot of land is said to have been purchased from Walter Van Winkle in September 1849 by twelve men who formed an association. In early November of that year promotional lots were for sale. A 9 foot by 10 foot section cost $15.00. In 1875 several graves were relocated thanks to the Legislature for a railroad right of way. The last burial at this cemetery is said to have been circa 1990. The cemetery does not have any plots for sale. The Holy Name Cemetery on West Side Avenue in Jersey City keeps the records and maintains the cemetery.
